What will you be doing as the Director of Development?
Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Development provides leadership in the development and implementation of current and new revenue generating programs. As part of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Development provides direction to major projects, programs and initiatives to increase Pride Toronto’s awareness and reputation. The incumbent cultivates perspectives sponsors, partners, grants, gifts and other revenue streams as directed by the Executive Director.
Responsibilities include:
Sponsorship and Fund Development (60%)
- Develop and implement an annual strategy to secure funding, including an annual scan of available grants, sponsorships, donations, gifts, fundraisers and revenue markets.
- Experience and knowledge of current sponsorship trends, with the ability to increase new sponsors by up to 30%. Target objectives include increasing sponsorship, creating sponsorship products and licensing deals in order to meet or exceed the overall business objectives.
- Develop, maintain and implement sponsorship program guidelines to increase sponsorship retention, recruitment, satisfaction, and support.
- Work with the Grants and Fund Development Manager to establish new and creative fund development tactics and strategies
- Oversee all necessary funding applications and reports as required, and ensure compliance with contractual obligations stemming from funders.
- Ensure all contractual funding agreements are completed successfully and in accordance with Pride Toronto’s policies.
- Develop annual sponsorship strategies, sponsorship packages and sponsorship reports.
- Develop appropriate sponsorship opportunities that are in the best interest of Pride Toronto.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with all public and private funders, sponsors, donors, etc.
- Supervise and provide guidance to the Sponsorship team and the Sponsorship Program.
- Manage all sponsorship activities. Responsible for sponsor prospecting, proposal customization and presentation, contract revision and servicing, sponsor follow-up and support. and representing Pride Toronto at sponsors’ functions.
- Work with the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team to develop, implement and maintain an annual fundraising event to support the organization.
Government Relations (10%)
- Work with the Executive Director to develop an overall government relations strategy.
- Research and monitor government activities that could affect Pride Toronto’s business.
- Support the Executive Director in building and maintaining professional relationships with members of all three levels of government.
- Collaborates with industry advocates to build areas of common interest.
- Attend meetings with government officials on behalf of Pride Toronto.
- Support the drafting of formal communication to the government.
Grant Management (10%)
- Support the Grants and Fund Development Manager in researching new grant funding and business development opportunities.
- Maintain and build relationships with funders and other strategic partners on a local, provincial, and national level.
- Review proposals/LOIs, grant application narratives, budgets, and reports prepared by the Grants and Fund Development Manager.
- Provide a monthly report to the Executive Director on all grants.
- Review all grants reports before submitting.
Community Engagement (10%)
- Support the community engagement effort of Pride Toronto in all facets of the organization’s work through internal programming and external relationships.
- Provide a structure for community engagement at Pride Toronto that allows each Pride Toronto program to meet desired outcomes and fulfill long-term community impact.
- Supervise and provide guidance to the Community Engagement team and the Community Engagement Program.
- Participate and establish a role for Pride Toronto in all community engagement endeavours, identify ways to provide input and support to the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
Business Engagement (10%)
- Develop, monitor and communicate Pride Toronto's relationship with local 2SLGBTQI+ business.
- Create and manage project roadmaps for marketing local 2SLGBTQI+ business.
- Work with ED and sponsors to ensure the process meets expected business outcomes.
- Identify and mitigate risks to successful process implementation.
- Establish required roles, routines, templates and any other elements needed to support the process.
- Establish critical success factors and key performance indicators for the process.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 6 years management experience with at least 3 years experience in a senior management role, preferably in a not-for-profit organization.
- Experience working with all forms of revenue generation in a not-for-profit context, including corporate sponsorship, government and foundation grants, etc.
- Significant and successful financial procurement with demonstrated results.
- Experience working in an environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to easily multi-task.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Database management and CRM experience.
- Experience writing successful grant applications at all levels of government.
- Experience negotiating successful sponsorship packages and agreements.
- Experience working with all levels of government.
- Proven experience in relationship building and donor stewardship.
- CFRE Certification is an asset.
- Experience working with 2SLGBTQI+ organizations and communities.
- Experience drafting and managing budgets.
- Experience with advertising development and placement is an asset.
- Experience with capital campaigns and individual giving programs is an asset.
- Post-secondary education in business development, not-for-profit administration or related is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to direct activities that meet organizational goals and objectives.
- Experience with program development, implementation and evaluation.
Nice to haves:
- Exceptional strategic thinking abilities and experience in successfully overseeing complex projects.
- Strong organizational skills including the ability to simultaneously manage multiple priorities.
- Proven ability to work independently as well as in a group setting.
- Proficient with G-Suite.
- Familiarity with Pride Toronto.
- Experience working with the 2SLGBTQI+ communities.
- A valid G driver’s license.
- Bilingual in French and English.
Work Environment:
- Works normal hours Monday through Friday, although longer hours and weekends will be required when facing deadlines or dealing with critical time sensitive situations and the Festival period.
- Spends time with key stakeholders to understand their needs.
- Interacts with Managers in all departments in the organization.
- Attends social events after hours to represent the organization.
